Los Angeles Americans for Safe Access is one of the most active local grassroots organizations in California. Members are actively involved in educating elected officials, promoting special events, and staging emergency response protests to DEA raids.

Our monthly meetings are the place to get the latest news from the front lines of the campaign for patients' rights in California. We often have special guest speakers and skills training for advocates.

ASA meetings are held on the third Saturday of every month.

Americans for Safe Access (ASA) is looking for medical cannabis patients and advocates who live in unincorporated communities in Los Angeles County. We need volunteers to meet privately with their representatives on the Board of Supervisors and speak at public meetings in opposition to a proposed ban on collectives and cooperatives. ASA will help you prepare and schedule meetings.

July 18, 2009 Reception for Tom Kikuchi at LA-ASA Meeting

The LA-ASA Chapter is hosting a special reception for Thomas Kikuchi at our monthly chapter meeting on Saturday, July 18. Please join us at Haru Sushi Café to celebrate Tom’s recent release from federal prison after serving over three and a half years for growing medical cannabis. Tom, his partner Stephanie Landa, and actor Kevin Gage were convicted in 2005 – despite the fact that the City of San Francisco and the local police department approved the garden.

Come meet Tom and hear the latest news in the grassroots campaign to protect and expand patients’ rights. Other items on the agenda include an update on the regulatory process in Los Angeles, news about SJR 14, and other developments at the local, state, and federal level.

“ABC’s of Citizen Advocacy”
Hello, LA-ASA. Today's City Council meeting was very long, but the Council finally voted unanimously to extend the moratorium on new medical cannabis collectives for the last six-month period. Councilmember Dennis Zine agreed with advocates that the City Attorney’s draft ordinance was unacceptable, and thanked ASA members for their hard work in pushing for sensible regulations. Instead of a regular meeting this month, ASA will have a table and a sign making party at this year's Medical Cannabis Expo in West Hollywood on September 20. Please come visit this all day event, which features live music, special guest speakers, and dozens of exhibitors from all aspect of the medical cannabis movement. Organizers ask for a $5 donation at the door, but no one is turned away for lack of funds.

LA-ASA members will be making signs at 1:00 PM on Saturday, September 20, for the "Free Charles Lynch" rally on October 6. This sign making party and Expo will replace our regular monthly meeting so come on down and pitch in.

On October 6, ASA and other organizations are calling for medical cannabis supporters to gather at the federal courthouse in downtown Los Angeles in a show of support for victims of federal interference and to call for an end to raids and intimidation. We hope to have hundreds of peaceful protesters there! Please mark your calendars for this important date now.

The rally will coincide with a hearing for convicted medical cannabis dispensary operator Charles Lynch, who faces decades in federal prison if the judge does not grant him a new trial at the hearing on October 6. Supporters will gather in the courtroom at 8:00 AM to support Lynch and his family, then rally outside at 11:00 AM.

The planning for this large event starts this Saturday at the LA-ASA meeting. I am sending this message to all of our Southern California announcement lists so that anyone who wants to help promote and organize the event can get plugged in. Medical cannabis researcher Jahan Marcu will be our special guest speaker on February 16. Jahan is currently investigating cannabinoid synergy at the California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute, and effectively translates complex scientific concepts to a lay audience. As the youth member of ASA's Medical and Scientific Advisory Board, Mr. Marcu represents the future of cannabinoid research, and is developing international networks of key cannabis researchers. He has served as a volunteer for ASA since 2003. He has lectured on the subject of cannabinoids at Cannabis Cooperatives and at New College of California. At San Francisco State University, he investigated the therapeutic applicability of whole plant cannabinoid ratios, correlating these ratios to effects reported by medical cannabis patients and in clinical trials. He is currently completing his Bachelor of Science in Cellular and Molecular Biology at San Francisco State University.
